Oldham college

The complete regeneration of the Oldham campus involved extensive demolition and three new buildings.

Our work can currently be seen in the first of these – Building A is a five storey building for which we designed and fitted out the atrium area, the breakaway spaces and the main reception.

Working directly with the College, we took the core of the College brand (the O) and blended it with homage to Oldham’s industrial past. Thus, the O becomes a cotton reel, from which extends an endless strand of yarn that runs throughout the building.

This motif is perhaps best seen on the imposing reception desk which was designed and built by ourselves to recall the dark solidity of a mill building, highlighted by the reel and thread, and relieved with a brightly lit built-in display cabinet in which the College’s original deeds of incorporation are on display.

More about the project

We have also produced designs for the interiors of buildings B and C. These include a laboratory, IT rooms and a recording studio. Our unmatched BIM expertise came into its own for these highly specialised spaces, coordinating and integrating complex equipment, utilities and data networks.

When people ask how the essence of Oldham College has been so powerfully realised in our designs, we have to confess that our lead designer on this project was herself once a student at Oldham College!
